Raspberry Pi Computing: Monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana aims to provide a description of the process of setting up a Raspberry Pi computer to measure, record and present metrics using a combination of Prometheus and Grafana.
If you've heard about the Raspberry Pi you may know that it provides a fantastic method to learn about using a computer and to develop some skills that go beyond the basics.
It has the ability to provide a bridge between the sometimes abstract computing environment and the physical world. In this case we are going to use it to set up a monitoring 'stack' consisting of the software platforms Prometheus and Grafana. This will allow us to measure and monitor a range of different aspects of computing technology including developing your own specialised monitoring.
Who is this book for? You! By getting hold of a copy of this book you have demonstrated a desire to learn, to explore and to challenge yourself. That’s the most important criteria you will want to have when trying something new. Your experience level will come second place to a desire to learn. It may be useful to be comfortable using the Windows operating system (I’ll be using Windows 7 for the set-up of the devices (yes I know that it’s out of support, I’m in the process of changing to a full time Linux Desktop, but I’m not the only person who uses the main computer in the house). You should be aware of Linux as an alternative operating system, but you needn’t have tried it before. Before you learn anything new, it pretty much always appears indistinguishable from magic. but once you start having a play, the mystery falls away.

The Raspberry Pi is about as minimalist as a computer gets, but it has the power to run a full Linux operating system and many great desktop and command line tools as well. Can you push it to operate at the level of a $2,000 computer? This book is here to help you find out. The primary focus of this book is getting as much as possible done with a s ...
Having the passion by colleagues at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory to design inexpensive computers aimed at bringing back the good old days where kids could be seen using a computer for programming and games.
